PRESENTATION

THE PRIN PNRR 2022 project "Performing power: political communication, consensus and audience in the ancient cities" aims to investigate, from a comparative perspective, the forms and modes of ancient political communication with respect to rhetorical strategies, the relationship between speakers and audience, individual and group dynamics, the role of emotions, deliberative and decision-making processes, leadership and negotiation.

The different Research Units will work on ancient Greece and/or Rome. Possible areas of research include leadership and interactions between speakers and audiences; nonverbal expressions of power and command; modes of response of general audiences and/or specific social groups; challenge and contestation (violent or nonviolent) of power; satire and critique of authority. The project will contribute to the understanding of how power is established, exercised, received, supported, challenged, mocked, etc., through the study of documents and literary texts pertaining to the civil, political and/or military spheres in a period between the 5th century B.C. and the Late Empire.
